This significant plea for de-escalation was articulated in a joint declaration issued on the inaugural day of the BRICS summit held in New Delhi. The declaration specifically warned against any actions that could further destabilize the region. It emphasized the critical need to safeguard civilian populations, uphold the sovereignty of nations, and ensure the uninterrupted security of global trade routes, energy supplies, and maritime passages. Furthermore, BRICS expressed strong apprehension regarding attacks on peaceful nuclear installations operating under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The bloc underscored that such assaults constitute a violation of international law and demanded that the protection of these nuclear facilities be guaranteed, even during ongoing hostilities. The communiqué also advocated for an immediate ceasefire and unhindered access for humanitarian aid in areas including Gaza, Lebanon, Sudan, and Syria. This unanimous agreement is particularly noteworthy as BRICS foreign ministers were unable to reach a consensus on a joint statement concerning the Middle East just last May. Chinese President Xi Jinping reiterated this message, encouraging BRICS to actively contribute to peace-building efforts in the region. He stressed that warfare serves no one's interests and urged relevant parties to pursue political solutions and strive for a lasting and comprehensive ceasefire. Notably, despite existing tensions between Iran and the United Arab Emirates, both nations endorsed the joint declaration. A significant diplomatic encounter saw Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian meet with Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed, marking the most high-level interaction between the two countries since the conflict began.
