He lauded Prime Minister Mian Shehbaz Sharif's initiatives, including laptop schemes and other educational projects, aimed at supporting engineers. Governor Hashmi, who was the chief guest at the ceremony, elaborated on the multifaceted contributions of engineers, ranging from designing missiles and aircraft to ensuring cybersecurity, advancing agriculture, and developing crucial medical technologies like X-ray and MRI machines. He emphasized that society's progress and development would be incomplete without their expertise. It was a day of immense pride and joy for parents, witnessing their dreams for their children come to fruition. The convocation celebrated the achievements of the Batch of 2022, with 2262 students receiving their BS/BE degrees and 881 earning Masters qualifications. In recognition of outstanding academic performance, 34 students were honored with gold medals for securing first positions, and 40 scholars were conferred with PhD degrees. Dr. Nauman Ahmed, the Pro-Vice Chancellor and Acting Vice Chancellor, delivered the welcome address. He noted that Vice Chancellor Dr. Tufail Ahmed was absent due to the sad demise of his father, and prayers were offered for the departed soul. Dr. Ahmed highlighted the university's commitment to innovation in research and academics, proudly mentioning the disbursement of nearly 13,000 scholarships totaling Rs. 590 million. He stated that NED continues its educational journey focused on a knowledge economy, having achieved impressive rankings within the top 400 universities by Times Higher Education and top 500 by QS World University Rankings. He also drew attention to the "Ma'an Ji Endowment Fund" scholarship, established by Engineer Aftab Rizvi, and ongoing faculty exchange programs with international institutions. Ismail Rahu, the Minister for Universities and Boards, extended his congratulations to the graduates, acknowledging their significant academic milestone while reminding them that the journey of learning continues. He affirmed the Sindh government's dedication to fostering an optimal educational environment in universities, noting the progress in appointing permanent Vice Chancellors across most institutions. He also mentioned that Dr. Tufail Ahmed currently serves as the acting Vice Chancellor for Karachi University. Addressing prevailing economic challenges, Rahu stated that despite global financial constraints, the provincial budget for universities had been increased from Rs. 42 billion to Rs. 46 billion, although no new development schemes could be introduced. Dr. Sarosh Lodhi, Chairman of the Charter Inspection and Evaluation Committee, congratulated the students on graduating from one of Pakistan's finest universities. He expressed confidence in their potential to transform the world, urging them to embrace hard work and dedication in their professional lives, as learning is a continuous process. Dr. Lodhi emphasized NED's esteemed position both nationally and internationally, and encouraged students to cherish their country and shoulder their responsibilities towards its progress. Engineer Aftab Rizvi, the founder of the Ma'an Ji Endowment Fund, delivered a heartfelt message, reminding students that their degree, while bearing their name, truly represents the immense sacrifices and hard work of their parents and teachers. He advised them that true greatness lies in helping the less fortunate. He also stressed the importance of upholding social ethics in their professional careers.
