Renowned architect Kamil Khan Mumtaz recently shed light on the critical imbalance between humanity and the natural environment, attributing it primarily to unchecked industrial production and the excessive consumption of natural resources. Speaking at a Cafe Learning Session organized by the Aga Khan Cultural Service Pakistan at the historic Barood Khana within Lahore Fort, Mr. Mumtaz emphasized the urgent need to look towards traditional lifestyles and construction methodologies for guidance in achieving sustainable development. The session drew a diverse audience of experts from architecture, heritage conservation, engineering, arts, and archives.
Mr. Mumtaz articulated that the fundamental connection between human life and the environment rests on a cycle of resource acquisition and their eventual return to nature, a process that must operate within balanced limits. He stressed the finite nature of natural resources, asserting that no ecosystem can sustain usage beyond its inherent capacity.
Tracing the evolution of human interaction with nature, Mr. Mumtaz explained that for approximately three hundred thousand years, human societies functioned under the principles of a natural economy. During this era, humans procured resources solely to meet their needs. Hunter-gatherer societies, for instance, saw no economic benefit in excessive hunting, as resource utilization was confined to basic necessities.
The agricultural revolution marked the first significant shift in this system, as methods for greater production from natural assets like land and animals were adopted. This innovation introduced the concepts of surplus production and storage. However, the architect highlighted that the past few decades have witnessed a dramatic surge in natural resource consumption due to industrial production and mechanized systems. The industrialization of agriculture, characterized by widespread pesticide use and increasing agricultural machinery, has further exacerbated environmental pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.
Mr. Mumtaz unequivocally linked climate change to this escalating imbalance. He cited rising global temperatures, melting glaciers, and an increase in floods and landslides as stark manifestations of environmental degradation.
He also drew a sharp contrast between the concept of 'progress' in traditional and modern societies. In older civilizations, progress was often defined by an individual's journey towards becoming a better human being. Conversely, modern societies have largely equated success with the accumulation of material wealth.
Discussing contemporary heritage conservation, Mr. Mumtaz argued that historical structures and sites should not merely be viewed as tangible assets. Instead, he advocated for a deeper understanding of the traditional knowledge and architectural philosophies embedded within them. He explained that past construction methods were intrinsically linked to local climates and available resources, a wisdom that contributed to the remarkable longevity of these ancient buildings.
Tauseef Khawaja, CEO of Aga Khan Cultural Service Pakistan, echoed these sentiments. He underscored the importance of reconsidering traditional architectural knowledge and techniques in the contemporary era, noting the environmental compatibility and enduring nature of many historical structures that have stood for centuries.
