India has voiced strong apprehension following the discovery of an alleged plot to carry out a mass shooting at a Hindu temple in Aurora, Illinois, United States. New Delhi has urged American authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter, ensure accountability for the individual responsible, and implement robust measures to safeguard both the Indian and Hindu communities residing in the US.
US law enforcement officials have apprehended 19-year-old Alexandros Papourakis in connection with the foiled scheme. During a search of his residence, investigators reportedly seized a rifle, numerous loaded magazines, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, body armor, and various materials associated with white supremacist ideologies. Furthermore, a written document was uncovered, which reportedly contained violent sentiments specifically directed towards individuals of South Asian, and particularly Indian, descent.
Authorities allege that Papourakis was planning a large-scale attack on the Sri Venkateswara Swami Balaji Hindu Temple in Aurora. Police reports indicate that the suspect's vehicle was observed in the temple's parking area on the day the incident was reportedly planned. While the specific target location for the potential assault remains under active investigation, officials confirm the broader plot.
Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, conveyed India's particular alarm over the alleged plan's anti-Hindu and racist undertones, especially the references to violence against people of Indian origin. Consequently, India has reiterated its demand for a comprehensive inquiry, the prosecution of those responsible, and the establishment of preventative measures to avert similar occurrences in the future.
